“I love you,” his partner
whispered. He held his partner’s hand tightly. It could’ve happened at any
moment, the moment where the love of his life would disappear for the rest of
his life.
“I love you too.” He whispered back. If his lover disappeared on him now, what was going to keep him sane?

“Tell me your favourite memory of
us together,” his lover gasped. He bit the inside of his mouth, trying to
choose one. There was too many to choose. The time where they were on their
first date, not caring about the disapproving looks that they received for
being a homosexual couple, when he first met him, when they were paired up for
the same work group, basically every memory he had of his lover was his
favourite.
“I guess it would be the day you said yes to me,” he smiled lovingly. He softly intertwined his fingers with his partner’s fingers and brought his partner’s hand to his lips. He then explained all the feelings he felt on that day. The anxiety, the joy, the fear he felt when he asked him to be his boyfriend. He had ignored all of flirtatious looks he received from girls at work; he only had his eyes at a certain male. Luckily for him, the male also had the same look he did on him.

Beeeeeep beeeeeep. Without even
realising the hand he was holding went limp. He looked at the heart monitor and
let out a choke. His lover had died. Tears streamed down his face as he let
reality sink in. He tried to stop the sobs caught in his throat so that he
wouldn’t cause a disturbance for any of the other patients but he couldn’t do
it. He cried into the bed with heavy tears. The one he loved with his whole
heart had disappeared.
After several minutes when he
actually brought his act together, he glanced at his lover’s face and couldn’t
help but smile sadly. His lover had died with a peaceful smile. He didn’t know
how or why he could die with such a face but then again he was proud of him. He
had been fighting the disease in his body for years until his body finally gave
out. Even he didn’t know otherwise, he would’ve thought that his lover was just
asleep, that he would wake up the next day.
He stroked his partner’s cheek
softly before kissing him on the forehead. He turned around and stood in the
doorway for a long time – looking back at his lover’s face, trying to memorise
all the features before he disappeared. When he was done he stood at the door for
a few seconds before closing the door. Closing out the strong need to just rush
back in there and cradle the body. With that, he walked down the dark hallways
with quivering shoulders – a sure sign that he was trying to not to cry.
He walked out of the hospital and
stared solemnly at the ward where his partner rested before whispering
something and turning around to disappear into the lonely streets.
“Goodbye my love.”
